The Plot
Klara’s reality shifts dramatically when she is selected by a fiercely protective mother, brought to life by six-time Academy Award-nominee Amy Adams, to become a companion for her young daughter, Josie, portrayed by breakout star Mia Tharia. As the Artificial Friend integrates herself into the rhythms of their household, she and Josie develop an intense, kindred-spirit connection. Klara relies on her childlike curiosity and unyielding devotion to help mend the family’s emotional fractures, all while coming face-to-face with the heartbreaking reality of Josie’s failing health and progressive, enigmatic illness.
The movie’s script was co-written by Waititi alongside Dahvi Waller (Mrs. America), with original author Kazuo Ishiguro on board as an executive producer to ensure the thematic core of his novel remained completely intact.
