Embedded into my childhood is a core memory of playing a Pirates of the Caribbean video game. I wanted to make sure I wasn’t hallucinating, so I Googled, and what do you know? There, indeed, was a Pirates of the Caribbean video game released in 2003, but there’s a slight catch here.
The game was first developed as Sea Dogs 2. Disney, however, apparently bought the rights to turn it into a movie tie-in for The Curse of the Black Pearl starring Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. Interesting—I honestly didn’t know that at the time (but I was also 9 years old).
I did notice, however, that the game had very little to do with the film storyline, a deliberate choice from the developers to make it in an open-world setting.

You see, in 2003, standard movie tie-in games were infamous for being rushed 3D action-platformers that strictly followed a film’s script scene-for-scene. Pirates of the Caribbean completely broke that mold because it wasn’t built as a movie game at all.
Russian development studio Akella was already deep into production on Sea Dogs 2, a complex nautical RPG sequel to their popular 2000 PC title. Seeing the potential of Johnny Depp’s breakout performance in Disney’s upcoming film, publisher Bethesda Softworks helped broker a deal for Disney to acquire the interactive rights. Akella rebranded the title, added the Black Pearl ship as an endgame encounter, and dropped in a brief cameo from Captain Jack Sparrow to tie it all together.
Whether it was boarding enemy ships or battling through sudden tropical storms , this game was a blast. While critics at the time were caught off guard by its steep learning curve and loose movie connections, gamers who took the plunge discovered one of the most immersive pirate simulators of the early 2000s, setting the foundation for future open-world seafaring adventures like Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and Sea of Thieves.
