The first half of 2001 was actually pretty good, all things considered…at least in my 7-year-old world.

For me, one of the best things about that spring and summer was the release of great music, including Janet Jackson’siconic All For You album. When I reflect on that time period, I think of the memories the titular track brought me, and if I close my eyes while listening to it in the present day, I can take myself right back to early 2001.

If I could pick one word to describe the song “All For You,” it would be whimsical—a core memory of an era where things were much simpler, and in my opinion, better in a lot of different ways.

While “All For You” feels like a warm nostalgia trip today, back in 2001, it was an absolute juggernaut on global airwaves:

• Radio History: Upon its March 2001 release, it became the first single in history to be added to every pop, rhythmic, and urban radio format within its first week.
• 7-Week Billboard Reign: The song rocketed straight to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, staying at the top spot for seven straight weeks and becoming the longest-reigning hit of the entire year.
• Grammy Glory: The track went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording at the 44th Annual Ceremony.

And then there was the music video…I remember being absolutely obsessed with it. Directed by Dave Meyers, the clip transported Janet and her dancers into a bright, two-dimensional animated cityscape. It was bright, beautiful and oh-so-Y2K with a killer dance break, where she sampled her sister Rebbie Jackson’s “Centipede” and Shannon’s “Let the Music Play,” 

Typing out that it’s been 25 years feels insane, but I’m forever grateful to have experienced this era in Ms. Jackson’s career, even if I was kid at the time. A toast to “All For You.”
