Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are witnessing a historic theatrical launch as Spider-Man: Brand New Day soars past all preliminary forecasts.

Starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the superhero entry pulled in a staggering $168 million domestically on its opening Friday, drawing audiences across 4,487 North American locations, according to a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter. The figure far surpasses conservative pre-release estimates, which initially placed the domestic debut around $195 million across the full weekend.

Propelled by an enthusiastic A CinemaScore, revised North American three-day weekend projections sit at $325 million. If realized, the launch will rank as the second-highest domestic opening weekend in cinematic history, trailing only 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($357.1 million).

Audience Reception and Financial Performance

Strong Saturday and Sunday holds could push the web-slinger even closer to record-breaking territory.

Given the film’s $225 million production budget, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has cleared its baseline costs within its first 48 hours of public release, re-establishing the character as an undisputed theater-filling icon.

In his review of the film, Decked Out Editor, Ryan Smith, writes, “Holland is the reason the emotional side holds. He plays Peter as a man in worse shape than the script actually writes him, and the gap between those two things is where the performance sits. It’s the best work he’s done in the suit, and the first time the damage has been the whole performance rather than the bits between the jokes. Sadie Sink is the standout of the whole film, and she’s carrying the hardest part of it. She’s playing grief rather than menace. There’s a version of this character that’s all glowing eyes and portent, and she never once reaches for it. Zendaya has less to do than in any of the previous three, and does something quite difficult with it: MJ has to be warm towards a man she’s meeting for the first time, and you can see the whole history she isn’t having.

And the film’s massive success already should be a surprise to nobody.
