“The Kid” is back. Forty-two years after Prince transformed pop culture with his movie debut and multi-platinum soundtrack, Purple Rain is officially making the leap to Broadway. Producer Orin Wolf announced that the stage musical adaptation will land at New York City’s historic Majestic Theatre in the spring of 2027.

Set in 1984 Minneapolis against the backdrop of rising music television stardom, the story centers on “The Kid”—a magnetic young frontman trying to guide his band to the top while wrestling with personal turmoil, family secrets, and artistic rivalry.

As per Variety, producer Orin Wolf spoke on honoring the legend’s signature work:

Prince is, without doubt, one of the rarest, most brilliant musicians we’ve ever had. What he accomplished with ‘Purple Rain’ in 1984 — the song, the album and the film — is a testament to the art of making music and showcases it at the highest level. It will be every bit as exciting for audiences today as it was when we first heard these songs on our boom boxes.”

Following an initial pre-Broadway staging in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis at the Hennepin Arts’ State Theatre, the creative leadership underwent strategic refinements to prepare the production for its New York run.

  • Direction & Choreography: Helmed by Saheem Ali with dynamic stage movement choreographed by Emmy winner Ebony Williams (Renaissance World Tour).
  • Book & Music Team: Written by Peter Duchan, with music supervision by Jason Michael Webb. Original Revolution drummer Bobby Z and keyboardist/producer Morris Hayes serve as key musical consultants.
  • Soundtrack Heritage: The production leverages a score backed by an album that spent 24 weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and secured two Grammys alongside an Oscar for Best Original Song Score.

Director Saheem Ali emphasized the production’s commitment to Variety as well preserving the energy of the source material:

“Prince was an icon and ‘Purple Rain’ is iconic… Our aim is not only to honor the legacy that Prince built, but to make his timeless music feel urgent and alive, passing it on to the next generation of fans who will make it their own.”

Official casting announcements will follow in the coming months. Tickets for the Broadway run of Purple Rain will go on sale via Telecharge in September 2026.
