Following its record-breaking run as the first biographical feature to cross the $1 billion threshold at the global box office, Antoine Fuqua’s Michael has officially conquered the home media landscape. Starring Jaafar Jackson in his debut lead role as his legendary uncle, the Lionsgate release claimed the top spot across all packaged media sales registries in its home video debut, according to Blu-ray.com.

According to the company, for the week of July 18, title captured 38% of its total unit sales on 4K Ultra HD, easily cementing it as the week’s highest-selling 4K format release.

‘Obsession’ Proves 4K Format Power

Claiming a strong #2 finish on the Blu-ray charts is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s Obsession. Directed by Curry Barker on a lean $750,000 production budget, the psychological thriller built on its impressive $719 million global theatrical performance to capture physical media enthusiasts.

Obsession posted exceptionally high physical enthusiast metrics, generating 100% of its sales from high-definition discsand an impressive 86% of total unit sales on 4K UHD. The indie favorite finished the week selling 82% as many overall Blu-ray units as MICHAEL, demonstrating the enduring purchasing power of horror and thriller collectors on premium physical formats.

In other MICHAEL news, the film also helped IMAX generate $103 million in second-quarter revenue—a solid 12% jump year-over-year, according to a recent report from  TheWrap. Thanks to the momentum created by MICHAEL and other major theatrical releases, IMAX confirmed it remains firmly on track to achieve $1.4 billion in global box office grosses for the year. Reaching that threshold would mark the highest annual box office total in the company’s history.
