Long before Travis Scott or BTS had their own individual McDonald’s specials, Michael Jordan was quietly inventing the celebrity meal. In the early 1990s, at the absolute peak of the Bulls’ first three-peat era, McDonald’s didn’t just give MJ a commercial; they gave him a proprietary burger build that still holds “grail” status among collectors and fast-food historians all over.
Ladies and gentlemen, the next file entry in our library is none other than The McJordan Special.

Table of Contents
The Meal
- Foundation: A Quarter Pounder beef patty on a sesame seed bun.
- The Glaze: A proprietary “McJordan BBQ Sauce.” (This is the critical component—tangier and smokier than the standard McNugget sauce).
- The Garnish: Sliced onions, pickles and two strips of smoked bacon.
- The Finisher: American cheese and mustard.
The Chicago Exclusive
Unlike the nationwide drops of today, the McJordan was a regional limited-release, primarily centered in the Chicagoland area (though a “Big 33” variant appeared in other markets like North Dakota).
- The Marketing: The commercials featured a young MJ explaining his “work ethic” and how it applied to the burger. It was the first time we saw a professional athlete treat a fast-food meal like a “Pro Model” sneaker.
- The $10,000 Liquid: In 2012, the legendary nature of this File was cemented when a former franchise owner from North Dakota sold a single, unopened one-gallon jug of McJordan BBQ sauce on eBay. The winning bid? $9,995.
- The Buyer: The identity of the buyer remains a mystery, though it was confirmed to be a resident of Chicago (and definitely not MJ himself). Hopefully, they didn’t actually put 20-year-old sauce on their ribs.
The McJordan is the “Air Jordan 1” of fast food. It proved that you don’t need to invent a new burger to create a cultural phenomenon—you just need the right curator and a legendary sauce.
