A still of Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible 2 (2000)

[THE FILES] 134: Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

If the first Mission: Impossible was a buttoned-up spy thriller, M:I-2 was the moment the franchise decided to take off its tie, put on a leather jacket, and jump off a mountain for no reason other than it looked cool. Released in May 2000, this movie is a neon-lit time capsule of exactly how we thought “cool” looked at the turn of the millennium.

That’s right, M:I-2 is the next file entry in our library.

Ethan Hunt’s Glow-Up

In 1996, Ethan Hunt was a clean-cut government agent. By 2000, he had grown out his hair, mastering the “wind-swept” rock climb and apparently started moonlighting as an Oakley sunglasses model.

  • The Hair Spec: Ethan’s flowing, mid-length locks is the real star of the movie.
  • The Gear: If you didn’t own a pair of Oakley Romeo sunglasses or a black leather duster after seeing this, did you even live through the Y2K era?
  • The Stunt: The opening rock climb at Dead Horse Point wasn’t just a scene—it was a flex.

The ‘John Woo’ Effect: Doves & Dual-Wielding

Tom Cruise hired legendary director John Woo, and Woo brought every single one of his signature moves to the party.

  • The Slow-Mo: Everything—walking, talking, even shifting gears on a motorcycle—happens in glorious, operatic slow motion.
  • The Doves: At one point, Ethan Hunt literally walks through a flock of white doves mid-firefight. It makes zero sense for a stealth mission, but it’s 100% iconic pop culture.

The Nu-Metal Soundtrack

  • The Anthem: Limp Bizkit’s “Take a Look Around” took the classic Mission theme and turned it into a nu-metal mosh pit. It’s still a gym-playlist staple in 2026.
  • The Napster Incident: Metallica’s “I Disappear” was recorded for this movie. When a demo of it leaked on Napster before the film came out, it triggered the massive legal war that eventually changed how we listen to music forever.

The Box Office

  • #1 Worldwide: M:I-2 was the highest-grossing film of 2000 globally, raking in over $546 million.
  • The Competition: It beat out massive cultural juggernauts like Gladiator ($465M), Cast Away ($429M), and What Women Want ($374M).
  • The Record: For 17 months, it held the title of the highest-grossing movie of the new millennium until Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone arrived in late 2001. It proved that Tom Cruise, the action star, was the most stable investment in Hollywood.
