A still of Britney Spears in her Skechers ad from the early 2000s

[THE FILES] : Britney Spears x Skechers: “It’s the S” (1999–2002)

  • Active Era: 1999 – 2002
  • Flagship Silhouettes: Skechers Energy, Skechers 4 Wheelers Roller-Skates
  • The Valuation: Propelled Skechers through its 1999 IPO, positioning it to directly challenge Nike and Reebok.
  • The Legal Fallout: Ended in competing multi-million dollar federal lawsuits in 2003 over product approvals and tour sponsorships.

Long before luxury houses engineered the modern brand ambassador matrix, Manhattan Beach-based upstart Skechers pulled off one of the most lucrative marketing coups in retail history. In 1999, the brand signed a teenage Britney Spears right as her debut album …Baby One More Time transformed her into a global pop phenomenon.

The resulting “It’s the S” global campaign didn’t just put Skechers on the map as an athletic powerhouse—it permanently defined the chunky “dad shoe” aesthetic of the Y2K generation.

Taking it back to 1999 and the early 2000s, we’re revisiting Britney Spears’ Skechers era.

The History

  • The Face of Energy: Introduced in 1999, the Skechers Energy was a heavy, aggressively paneled leather sneaker featuring a thick mid-sole footprint. By placing Spears at the center of the campaign, Skechers transformed a clunky, utility-adjacent design into an absolute teen fashion requirement.
  • The D’Lites Lineage: The commercial weight of the Energy campaign was so dense that it fundamentally dictated Skechers’ design language for the next two decades, evolving directly into the iconic Skechers D’Lites collection in 2007.

The Pivot: The 4 Wheelers Collapse

As the partnership entered 2002, Skechers attempted to expand the pop star’s hyper-lucrative licensing perimeter by moving into a specialized sub-culture: hybrid roller-skates.

  • The Skate Deal: Spears signed a worldwide licensing agreement to launch a co-designed line of Skechers 4 Wheelers—retro quad roller-skates built directly onto the frames of chunky athletic sneakers.
  • The Structural Breakdown: The partnership collapsed behind the scenes due to standard corporate timeline friction. Skechers rushed promotional ads featuring Spears into global print rotations before the physical “Britney Spears Collection” skates were ready for distribution. Simply put, it was a good idea, but it collapsed quickly.

The Britney Spears era of Skechers proved that a pop star’s visual alignment could completely re-brand a value-tier footwear label into an object of intense street-level desire…despite the messy ending, of course.
