History & Context

Released on July 18, 2006, as the lead single from his second studio album FutureSex/LoveSounds, “SexyBack” marked a complete radical departure from Justin Timberlake’s earlier Michael Jackson-inspired R&B falsetto on 2002’s Justified. Seeking a dirtier, rock-influenced electronic sound, Timberlake teamed up with production visionaries Timbaland and Danja (Nate Hills) at Thomas Crown Studios in Virginia Beach. The resulting track shock-started mid-2000s pop radio with distorted, heavily compressed vocals, pounding industrial synth bass, and Timbaland’s signature hypeman vocal cues.

Production Highlights & Aesthetics

  • Radical Vocal Distortion: Timberlake intentionally ran his vocals through distortion pedals and radio-mic filters, drawing inspiration from David Bowie, Prince, and rock band The Strokes so listeners wouldn’t immediately recognize his voice.
  • Electro-Clash Sound Design: Merged four-on-the-floor electro beats with industrial club synthesis, effectively creating a brand-new subgenre of futuristic “futuristic club-pop” that defined late-2000s radio.
  • Cinematic Music Video: Directed by Michael Haussman and shot on location in Barcelona, Spain, starring Spanish actress Elena Anaya, the video took visual cues from David Fincher’s 1995 film Se7en and sleek fashion advertising.

Cultural Legacy

  • Pop Landscape Reset: Widely credited by music critics with killing off early-2000s bubblegum pop and ushering in the EDM-infused synth-pop wave that dominated the late 2000s and early 2010s.
  • Multi-Platinum Titan: Certified 3x Platinum by the RIAA, selling millions of digital downloads and securing Timberlake’s status as a dominant solo global superstar.

The Decked Out Review

The Lyrics

I’m bringin’ sexy back (yeah)
Them other boys don’t know how to act (yeah)
I think it’s special, what’s behind your back (yeah)
So turn around and I’ll pick up the slack (yeah)
Take ’em to the bridge (that’s it)

Dirty babe (uh-huh)
You see these shackles baby, I’m your slave (uh-huh)
I’ll let you whip me, if I misbehave (uh-huh)
It’s just that no one makes me feel this way (uh-huh)
Take ’em to the chorus

Come here girl (go ‘head be gone with it)
Come to the back (go ‘head be gone with it)
VIP (go ‘head be gone with it)
Drinks on me (go ‘head be gone with it)
Let me see what you’re twerking with (go ‘head be gone with it)
Look at those hips (go ‘head be gone with it)
You make me smile (go ‘head be gone with it)
Go ‘head child (go ‘head be gone with it)
And, get your sexy on (go ‘head be gone with it)
Get your sexy on (go ‘head be gone with it)
Get your sexy on (go ‘head be gone with it)
Get your sexy on (go ‘head be gone with it)
Get your sexy on (go ‘head be gone with it)
Get your sexy on (go ‘head be gone with it)
Get your sexy on (go ‘head be gone with it)
Get your sexy on

I’m bringin’ sexy back (yeah)
Them other fuckers don’t know how to act (yeah)
Come let me make up for the things you lack (yeah)
‘Cause you’re burning up, I gotta get it fast (yeah)
