History & Synopsis

Directed by Mark Rosman and released by Warner Bros. in July 2004, A Cinderella Story reimagines Charles Perrault’s timeless folklore in early-2000s San Fernando Valley. High school senior Sam Montgomery (Hilary Duff) works tirelessly as a maid at her late father’s retro diner under her self-absorbed stepmother Fiona (Jennifer Coolidge) and cruel stepsisters. Seeking escape through her dream of attending Princeton University, Sam forms an anonymous text-and-email romance with a mysterious pen pal named “Nomad”—unaware he is actually Austin Ames (Chad Michael Murray), the school’s star quarterback. When the pair agree to meet at the Halloween Homecoming dance, Sam disguises herself in a white gown and mask, dropping her cell phone as she rushes back to the diner at midnight.
