History & Overview

Released in July 2004 to coincide with Warner Bros.’ live-action film, Catwoman was developed by UK-based Argonaut Games and published globally by Electronic Arts. Following the plot of the film, players control Patience Phillips (modeled after Halle Berry), a timid graphic designer who uncovers a sinister corporate conspiracy involving Hedare Beauty’s toxic cosmetic line. After being murdered and resurrected by an Egyptian Mau cat, Patience gains feline agility and martial arts powers, setting out to dismantle the corporate empire.

Gameplay Mechanics & Features

  • Analog Whip Control: Innovated a unique control scheme where directional flicks of the right analog stick directed Catwoman’s bullwhip, allowing players to disarm enemies, latch onto overhead beams, or manipulate objects.
  • Feline Movement & Acrobatics: Emphasized wall-scaling, ledge-swinging, and high-altitude traversal across urban rooftops and factory environments using vertical movement paths.
  • Non-Lethal Combat System: Combat heavily penalized killing enemies; instead, players were encouraged to disarm, humiliate, or throw opponents into environmental hazards like trash dumpsters and open closets.
  • “Cat Sense” Visuals: Included a specialized vision mode that highlighted climbing paths, hidden objects, and enemy footprints in red and green hues.

Retrospective Legacy

  • Argonaut’s Final Console Release: Marked the final major console release for pioneer studio Argonaut Games before its liquidation in late 2004.
  • Cult Sixth-Gen Curiosity: While burdened by the film’s negative critical reception and awkward fixed camera angles, retro gaming collectors often revisit the title for its ambitious analog-stick combat system and acrobatic physics.

The Decked Out Review

“Despite camera frustrations and tie-in tropes, EA and Argonaut’s Catwoman delivered surprisingly bold wall-climbing traversal and a unique analog whip mechanic.”
