Visual Concept & Narrative Premise

Serving as the lead single for their fourth studio album *Lines, Vines and Trying Times*, “Paranoid” marked a dramatic visual and musical departure for the Jonas Brothers. Directed by the Malloy Brothers, the music video visually translates the claustrophobic pressures of global teen stardom. Operating within surreal, dreamlike set pieces, the video follows Kevin, Joe, and Nick as they navigate surreal anxiety scenarios: Kevin driving through a desert while surrounded by dozens of clones, Joe trapped inside a crowded bus surrounded by identical wrestling masks, and Nick trapped inside a high-speed car alongside an unpredictable wrestler. The trio eventually unites on an open soundstage platform, performing the synth-driven pop-rock anthem amid flashing strobe telemetry.

Primary Performance Roster

Joe Jonas as Lead Vocalist / Performer
Nick Jonas as Co-Lead Vocalist / Guitarist / Keyboards
Kevin Jonas as Lead Guitarist / Backing Vocals
The Malloy Brothers as Video Directorial Unit

Trivia & Production History

  • Co-Written by a British Pop Legend: In addition to the three brothers, the song was co-written by acclaimed British songwriter Cathy Dennis—the mastermind behind historic mega-hits including Britney Spears’ “Toxic” and Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.”
  • Sonic Evolution to Synth-Pop: “Paranoid” saw the band transition away from their traditional pure pop-punk sound toward guitar-heavy synth-pop and dance-rock elements, signaling a more mature musical direction ahead of their 2009 World Tour.
  • Exclusive Disney Channel Premiere: The music video made its global television debut on May 23, 2009, broadcast directly on Disney Channel to capitalize on the band’s peak television ratings footprint.
  • Chart & Commercial Performance: The single debuted inside the top 40 of the US Billboard Hot 100 at #37 and achieved high-rotation airplay across international pop radio charts throughout the summer of 2009.

The Music Video

Lyrics

[Verse 1: Nick Jonas]
I make the most of all this stress
I try to live without regrets
But I’m about to break a sweat
I’m freaking out
It’s like a poison in my brain
It’s like a fog that blurs the sane
It’s like a vine you can’t untangle
I’m freaking out

[Pre-Chorus: Nick Jonas]
Every time I turn around
Something don’t feel right

[Chorus 1: Joe Jonas & Nick Jonas]
Just might be paranoid
I’m avoiding the lines ’cause they just might split
Can someone stop the noise?
I don’t know what it is, but I just don’t fit
I’m paranoid
Yeah!

[Verse 2: Nick Jonas]
I take the necessary steps
To get some air into my chest
I’m taking all the doctor’s meds
I’m still freaking out
That’s why my ex is still my ex
I never trust a word she says
I’m running all the background checks
And she’s freakin’ out

[Pre-Chorus: Nick Jonas]
Every time I turn around
Something’s just not right

[Chorus 2: Joe Jonas & Nick Jonas]
Just might be paranoid
I’m avoiding the lines ’cause they just might split
Can someone stop the noise?
I don’t know what it is, but I just don’t fit
Consider me destroyed (Consider me destroyed)
I don’t know how to act ’cause I lost my head
I must be paranoid (I must be paranoid)
And I never thought it would come to this
I’m paranoid

[Bridge: Nick Jonas & Joe Jonas]
Stuck in a room of staring faces (Yeah)
Caught in a nightmare, can’t wake up
If you hear my cry
Running through the streets
I’m about to freak
Come and rescue me

[Chorus 2: Joe Jonas & Nick Jonas]
Just might be paranoid (Might be paranoid)
I’m avoiding the lines ’cause they just might split
Can someone stop the noise? (Can someone stop the noise?)
I don’t know what it is, but I just don’t fit
Consider me destroyed (Consider me destroyed)
I don’t know how to act ’cause I lost my head
Oh, I must be paranoid (Must be paranoid)
I never thought it would come to this
I’m paranoid
