Why ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Is Skipping IMAX This Summer (and Where to Watch it Instead)

The highly anticipated summer blockbuster window is rapidly heating up, and web-heads worldwide are mapping out their opening weekend plans for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That said, you might be wondering if the film is going to be shown an IMAX. Much to the chagrin of someone like myself, it’s unfortunately not going to be. Here is exactly why Peter Parker is bypassing IMAX screens this summer—and the alternative premium architectures you should book instead to get the absolute most out of your ticket payload.

The Blockbuster Bottleneck

The summer theatrical grid is tightly packed, and major film studios routinely sign exclusive, multi-week inventory locks on PLF screens over a year in advance. Because IMAX auditoriums operate on a strict “one major movie at a time” infrastructure, a massive, competing studio tentpole holds an absolute monopoly over those specific projection tracks during Spidey’s key release window, specifically, The Odyssey, which is slated to be in IMAX through August 14.

Where You Can Watch Instead

ScreenX

Sony seems to be putting their bets on Screen X, which uses extra projectors to stretch the movie onto the left and right walls of the theater. It also reportedly creates a 270-degree panoramic view. Some like it, some hate it. I guess we have no other choice but to give it a shot here

Dolby Cinema

Or you can try Dolby Cinema:

  • The Look: Dual-laser projectors deliver deep, ink-black contrast levels and vibrant colors that make the suit pop without looking washed out.
  • The Sound: The theater wraps you in a Dolby Atmos sound system, meaning you’ll hear audio panning over your head and around your seat as things fly across the screen.

4DX

Think of this less like a standard movie and more like a theme park ride. 4DX syncs the action on screen with moving seats, wind blasts and simulated haptic feedback. It’s perfect if you want to physically feel the gravity-defying physics of a high-speed chase, which actually might be the best choice for this one.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026. U.S. Amazon Prime members can secure tickets to see the film early on July 29, 2026. Check out the Amazon Store for screening details and Fandango ticket registration.
