[THE FILES] 150: The Cheetah Girls 2 (2006)

  • Release Date: August 25, 2006
  • Director: Kenny Ortega
  • Filming Locations: Barcelona, Spain (shot entirely on location)
  • Viewership: 8.1 million viewers on its premiere night, making it the highest-rated DCOM of 2006.

For our 150th milestone, we’re heading back to the summer of 2006—a year that defined the peak of the Disney Channel Original Movie (DCOM) era. While the first Cheetah Girls gave us the grit of New York City, the sequel took the brand global, trading the Manhattan subways for the sun-drenched streets of Barcelona.

Directed and choreographed by Kenny Ortega (fresh off the record-breaking success of High School Musical), The Cheetah Girls 2 wasn’t just a sequel; it was a high-budget expansion that turned a girl group into an international phenomenon.

As such, The Cheetah Girls 2 is the next file entry in our library.

The Barcelona Factor

The decision to film on location in Spain was a massive leap forward for Disney’s production quality at the time. Ortega utilized the city’s iconic architecture—from the Park Güell to the Palau de la Música Catalana—to give the film a visual scale that surpassed its predecessor. The movie serves as a virtual tour of Barcelona, most notably during the “Strut” sequence, which remains one of the most celebrated musical numbers in the DCOM vault.

The Story

The narrative follows Galleria (Raven-Symoné), Chanel (Adrienne Bailon), Dorinda (Sabrina Bryan) and Aqua (Kiely Williams) as they enter a music festival in Barcelona. The conflict centers on the group’s success being threatened by local pop star Marisol (played by Spanish singer Belinda) and her overbearing mother, Lola.

While the first film was about discovery, Cheetah Girls 2 was about the pressure of maintaining success, exploring the tension between Galleria’s laser-focused ambition and the other girls’ desire to experience the world around them—a relatable “growing pain” for any young creative team.

The Soundtrack

  • Billboard 200: The soundtrack debuted at No. 5, selling 87,000 copies in its first week.
  • Sales: It was certified Platinum by the RIAA, eventually selling over 1.4 million copies in the US.
  • Key Tracks: * “The Party’s Just Begun”: A high-energy opening that signaled the group’s new, polished sound.
  • “Strut”: The definitive anthem of the film, peaking at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • “A la Nanita Nana”: A standout moment showcasing the vocal harmony between Bailon and Belinda.

The Cheetah Girls 2 marked the end of an era, as it was the final film in the franchise to feature Raven-Symoné. Her departure following the film shifted the dynamic for the third installment, One World, but the Barcelona chapter remains the high point for the group’s cultural impact.
