Wendy’s Retro Yellow Packaging Returns—And It Has Us Remembering the 1998 ‘Scooby-Doo’ Toys

Bullying works. After years of publicly begging Wendy’s to bring back their classic 1990s packaging for no other reason than the fact that us nostalgic millennials miss it, the company has finally given us what we’ve been wanting.

Per a recent report from USA Today, the nuggets, fries and Frostys will soon be repackaged in the original yellow cups and boxes, and while currently unconfirmed, rumor has it that the rollout will begin on Sept. 28, though the company told USA TODAY it will be rolling out the packaging to restaurants nationwide later in September, continuing into 2027.

As a 1990s baby myself, the memories have come flooding back upon the news of this announcement, and I instantly remembered the Wendy’s x Scooby-Doo 1998 (Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island) collaboration, which was one of my first fast food collectibles.

The collaboration was released to celebrate the premiere of the film Scooby-Doo on Zombie Island and came with with a set of 5 toys:

  • Scooby-Doo with Hamburger: Scooby figures paired with a pull-string or moving cheeseburger.
  • Peekaboo Scooby in a Haunted Stump: A creepy tree stump featuring a pop-up Scooby-Doo.
  • Armored Knight Figurine: A suit of armor toy where you could lift the face mask and rotate through the different characters (Shaggy, Scooby, and Velma).
  • Flip Book Notepad: A miniature notepad featuring flip-animation graphics from the movie.
  • Glow-in-the-Dark Maze Game: A haunted house-themed maze puzzle that would glow in the dark.

One might think they are gone forever, but thanks to collectors, you can actually find the full set via places like eBay for about $30, which isn’t bad considering the history behind it and the value. And, since this would have been the 1990s, that meant this collection was served alongside the classic yellow packaging that is finally making a comeback.

And while we’re at it, bring back the original barbecue sauce (you know what I’m talking about Wendy’s).

Sorry, bullying works.
