By 2001, Jennifer Lopez had successfully transitioned from a movie star to a full blown multimedia conglomerate with the simultaneous release of her album J.Lo and the film The Wedding Planner. Coming off the street-style aesthetics of “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” “Play” served as the second single for the album, leaning heavily into a high-gloss, futuristic aesthetic.

The Track History

“Play” was originally recorded as a demo for then-rising songwriter Christina Milian, who wrote the track in just 15 minutes. While the record ultimately went to Lopez, Milian is fully credited as a writer and background vocalist, and can be heard clearly in the chorus. The production came courtesy of Swedish duo Bag & Arnthor, who utilized a funky, electropop baseline, and the music video was a masterclass in early-2000s CGI. The setting—a private, hybrid spaceship-plane—featured sleek, rounded geometry and metallic surfaces that felt like Lopez was operating in the year 3000.

The Numbers

• The Global Charts: While the single “only” hit #18 in the US, the song was a massive hit in Europe and Canada, peaking in the Top 10 in over 10 countries.
• The Billboard Charts: “Play” also reached #2 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart, proving that the hardware was optimized for the nightlife scene.
