Wow, it’s been a whirlwind month or so since releasing Part 1 of How Come Nobody Ever Apologizes to Michael Jackson. While there’s been some incredible highs, such as making multiple bestseller categories on Amazon, there’s definitely been some growing pains as somebody who went the independent route after being told I would have to agree to cut this book substantially for a publishing contract. As a reminder, proceeds are going to charity, so it was never about making money, but I felt from a distribution/editing standpoint, that a publisher could really help in that regard. In the end, I believed cutting what was being demanded of me wouldn’t have served Michael the justice he deserves, so I walked away.

And with that, I walked away from all of the tools and resources authors have by way of their publishers to avoid, well, the problems I’ve encountered. From broken codes in the manuscript that were literally invisible to the naked eye, to Amazon showing page numbers in my author preview only to publish and print the first round of books…without page numbers, there’s been A LOT of lessons. Speaking of Amazon, I was advised that the platform would be the best and most affordable route for readers all around the world to have access.

If I could go back in time, however, I would not choose them to be the first distributor because while they do have a huge book platform, they are not solely dedicated to books in the way a Barnes & Noble type of retailer is. As such, their technical limitations for Kindle and print are very restrictive..this is why I had to split the book in the first place. On that note, one of the first pieces of feedback that came back to me from quite a few people regarding Part 1, was that the court documents and clippings were small and hard to read.

The fix for that has been enlarging these documents so that they take up most/all of the page (or even two pages). The only problem with that is (especially once you get to the trial testimonies) that there are now significantly more pages in an already restrictive print system. This means instead of three parts, we have…seven (Michael’s favorite number, by the way).

This was not my original vision at all, and is only happening because of the huge demand for physical books. So, starting October 11 with Part 3, the remaining splits will be released roughly every one to two weeks (October 25, November 8, November 22, November 29). From there, there will be one full e-book that isn’t separated (as I originally intended) and one full box set for print, for those that want it all in one-go. The most important thing, however, is that the technical problems have been solved thanks to some great people helping me.

Also beginning at the end of November is our expanded distribution for Part 1 (with the remaining parts to follow, along with the full e-book for those places and the box set). This means the series will officially be available in books stores and retailers. The author agreement I have with Amazon for this series is that each release is exclusive to the platform for three months, so that gives you the math on when to expect global distribution for each part. The plan is for the audiobooks to start rolling out in December, and the book is currently being translated in Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German, which is super exciting.

Oh, and the podcast…whew, this is going to be even more immersive. I wouldn’t quite say we’ve pushed it back, but the main focus has been on correcting the aforementioned issues and ensuring a seamless distribution process for the books. Q1 of 2027 or very early Q2 is still the goal.

As always, if you preordered the Kindle version in June back when this was supposed to be one full book, you will receive free ebook copies of the remaining parts, and proceeds go to charity.
