History & Context

Taped on March 25, 1983, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium for Motown Records’ 25th-anniversary celebration, Michael Jackson agreed to perform on the condition that he could do a solo spot following a reunion with The Jackson 5. After performing a medley of hits with his brothers, Michael took the stage alone in a black sequined jacket, a white rhinestone-glove, and silver socks to perform his non-Motown solo hit, “Billie Jean.”

Iconic Elements & Choreography

  • The Moonwalk Debut: During the bridge of “Billie Jean,” Jackson glided backward across the stage, executing the “backslide” street dance technique that he perfected with street dancers like Cooley Jackson and Jeffrey Daniel.
  • Signature Wardrobe: Introduced the iconic look that became synonymous with his Thriller era: a vintage black sequined fedora, high-water trousers, rhinestone-encrusted socks, loafers, and a single white glove.
  • Cultural Shift: Instantly elevated Michael Jackson from pop stardom to global megastardom, catapulting the Thriller album into becoming the best-selling album of all time.
