It’s a dream come true for us millennials. Xbox is officially taking its game preservation efforts to the next level. In a major move for classic gaming fans, Microsoft has officially launched an early release of its Xbox Backward Compatibility program on PC and Windows handheld devices.
The feature allows players to jump into original Xbox titles directly on desktop setups and portable devices like the ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X without needing a console connected.

The First Wave of Launch Games
The program is kicking off with four cult-favorite titles from the original Xbox generation, all available today through the Xbox on PC app and included across every tier of Xbox Game Pass:
- BLiNX: The Time Sweeper
- Conker: Live and Reloaded
- Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge
- Fuzion Frenzy
If you already own a digital copy of any of these titles on Xbox consoles, your license carries over automatically. Thanks to integration with Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming, players can switch seamlessly between console, PC, cloud, and handheld platforms without paying a second time.
Modern Visual Upgrades and PC Requirements
Rather than simply running basic emulations, Microsoft has built modern display settings directly into the PC app to clean up the retro visuals:
- Resolution Upscaling: Options to bump rendering up to 4x native resolution.
- Display Controls: Fullscreen, windowed modes, VSync, and customizable language/audio options.
- Graphics Filters: Built-in support for anisotropic filtering and anti-aliasing to smooth out early-2000s 3D models.
- Future Updates: Xbox Achievements are officially in development for all four titles and will drop in an upcoming update.
To run the new backward-compatible titles, PC and handheld systems need to run Windows 11, have at least 8 GB of RAM, and feature graphics capabilities equivalent to an Nvidia GTX 950 or AMD Radeon RX 550.
More games from the original Xbox and Xbox 360 libraries are expected to join the program as Microsoft continues expanding its preservation library.
And I, for one, can’t wait.
