Following a highly-successful pop-up in New York City, HBO has officially announced a straight-to-series order for Jay-Z in 8, a definitive, multi-part documentary series tracking the monumental life, musical evolution and corporate empire of Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter. Here’s the deal, the structure of Jay-Z in 8 divides his vast legacy into eight distinct, standalone film chapters, with each segment digging into a specific, pivotal era—ranging from his independent origins on the streets of Brooklyn and the foundation of Roc-A-Fella Records, to his brief 2003 retirement, his presidency at Def Jam Recordings, and his transition into a multi-billion-dollar venture capitalist. Standing alongside Jay-Z is Rick Rubin, who famously collaborated with Jay-Z on the timeless 2003 anthem “99 Problems,” will serve as a core on-camera guide, helping to break down the recording sessions and artistic mindset that drove each specific era.

Unprecedented Access to the Vault

Production details indicate that RadicalMedia has been granted full, unrestricted access to Jay-Z’s private, unreleased personal archives, and the documentary arrives during an incredibly busy and celebratory stretch for the Brooklyn native. Jay-Z is currently lining up a massive wave of global concerts and special pop-up events to honor two of his most legendary bodies of work: the 30th anniversary of his 1996 debut Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of his 2001 classic The Blueprint.

The momentum for the new series also follows his massive stage comeback in May, where he headlined the Roots Picnic. The historic performance served as a spectacular celebration of both his legendary career and the city of Philadelphia, with a setlist that loaded up on his biggest stadium hits alongside beloved, rarely performed deep cuts. Turning the night into a true family affair, he shared the stage with a parade of special guests, including Philadelphia icons Beanie Sigel and Freeway, longtime Roc-A-Fella collaborator Memphis Bleek, vocal powerhouses Jazmine Sullivan and Bilal, and the rap duo Young Gunz.

Stadium Takeover

Additionally, fans have a series of performances to look forward to:

  • Yankee Stadium Residency: A massive three-night takeover in New York this July to honor his career milestones:
    • July 10: A dedicated celebration for Reasonable Doubt.
    • July 11: A full focus on The Blueprint.
    • July 12: A hit-filled grand finale to close out the weekend.
  • “Jay-Z 30” Global Shows: Two major fall concerts announced, landing in Paris on September 10 and Los Angeles on October 23.
