A still of Nivea from "Don't Mess With My Man" (2002)

[THE FILES] 151: Nivea – “Don’t Mess With My Man” (2002)

In the summer of 2002, if you weren’t hearing Nivea’s “Don’t Mess With My Man” blasting from a car window or at the cookout, you probably weren’t outside. Long before she became a figure of R&B folklore due to her high-profile relationships, Nivea was Atlanta’s secret weapon—a singer with a “sweet-as-honey” tone and enough attitude to keep the industry on its toes.

As such, “Don’t Mess With My Man” is the next file entry in our library.

The Track

  • The Collab: Pairing Nivea’s youthful, girlish vocals with the gritty, street-certified harmonies of Brian and Brandon Casey was a genius move. It bridged the gap between the “Pop-Princess” aesthetic and energy that dominated the early 2000s.
  • The GRAMMY Nod: The song’s cultural footprint was so heavy that it landed a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. It proved that Atlanta’s “Crunk-R&B” blend could compete on the highest critical stage.

Peak 2002 Aesthetics

  • The Denim Revolution: The background dancers and Nivea were decked out in the Hendricks Apparel Group’s Raw Jean collection. Keep in mind, this was the era of heavy raw denim, oversized logos and the birth of “Street-Luxe.”
  • The Hair & Makeup: From the high-contrast highlights to the ultra-glossy lips, Nivea’s look defined the “It Girl” manual for the decade (peep the eyeshadow).

“Don’t Mess With My Man” is more than a nostalgia trip; it’s the blueprint for the defensive, confident R&B that modern stars are still trying to replicate.

Lyrics

Uh, uh uh, I like it baby (yeah yeah)
Yeah yeah yeah (ooh oh oh oh)
Nivea, y’all, JE c’mon (uh)

It was hard to find a brotha that was down for me
So I’m tellin’ everybody let him be
‘Cause he’s mine and I can’t take no pigeons tryna take my baby
So I thought I had to let you know
Find someone that you can call your own
‘Cause now you’re walkin’ in the danger zone
And if I touch you, I’ll be wrong

If you mess with my man, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Got my girls, got my man, so find your own and leave mine alone
Don’t mess with my man, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Here’s a little advice for you, find your own man

It was hard to find a girl that’s really down for me
Seems like a lot of niggas tryin’ me
‘Cause they tryna take my baby, oh what the hell, no
So now you really better check yourself
Messin’ with my girl is bad for your health and
So you know you will be dealt with
Better find your own, own girl

If you mess with my girl, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Got my niggas, got my girl, so find your own and leave mine alone
Don’t mess with my girl, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Here’s a little advice for you, find your own girl (ooh)

Girl I’m warning you (girl I’m warning you),
If you want my man (if you want my man)
You should just keep your hands to yourself, now-now

And playa I’m warning you, if you want my girl
I suggest (I suggest) that you look but don’t touch, now-now, yeah yeah

It was hard to find a brotha that was down for me, don’t mess with my man
It’s hard to find a girl that’s really down for me, don’t mess with my girl
Hard to find a brotha that was down for me, don’t mess with my man
So hard to find a girl that’s down for me, don’t mess with my girl

If you mess with my man, I’ma be the one to break it to ya (if you mess with my man)
Got my girls, got my man, so find your own and leave mine alone
Don’t mess with my man, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Here’s a little advice for you, find your own man

If you mess with my girl, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Got my niggas, got my girl, so find your own and leave mine alone
Don’t mess with my girl, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Here’s a little advice for you, find your own girl

If you mess with my man, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Got my girls, got my man, so find your own and leave mine alone
Don’t mess with my man, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Here’s a little advice for you, find your own man

If you mess with my girl, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Got my niggas, got my girl, so find your own and leave mine alone
Don’t mess with my girl, I’ma be the one to break it to ya
Here’s a little advice for you, (find your own girl)
