Earlier this week, Stone Island and New Balance officially confirmed the return of the “Ghost” 574. Launching on March 11, 2026, the “Ghost 2.0” collection is a masterclass in monochrome materiality. For this sophomore rollout, the duo is moving away from the earth-toned browns and navys of 2025, introducing three new shades inspired by the Spring/Summer ‘026 Ghost collection: Dust Grey, Slate Blue and Dark Beige.

Here is everything you need to know about the collection leading up to the release date.

The Material Architecture

The “Ghost” philosophy is about total tonal erasure—camouflage not as a pattern, but as a singular, uninterrupted hue. The architectural standout here is the suede-wrapped midsole. This is a massive departure from standard footwear manufacturing, where the midsole is typically left as raw, exposed foam. By wrapping the tooling in the same premium split-leather suede as the upper, Stone Island has effectively “erased” the traditional break-points of the shoe, turning a multi-component runner into a singular, sculptural object.

Furthering the “Ghost” aesthetic is the stitch-and-turn construction. This technique eliminates overlapping seams, creating clean, dimensional lines that mimic the padded structure of Stone Island’s archival outerwear. The branding—including the iconic ‘N’ and the heel tab—is rendered in a contrasting shaggy brushed suede, ensuring the logo is felt through texture rather than seen through color.

Legacy Hardware: The 1988 Blueprint

To understand the “Ghost 2.0,” you have to look at the 574’s industrial roots. Originally designed by Steven Smith in 1988, the 574 was a hybrid of the 576 upper and the 577 sole unit.

Stone Island’s 2026 version maintains the original ENCAP stability wedge—a soft EVA core encapsulated by a durable polyurethane rim—but hides it beneath the tonal suede wrap. It’s a collision of 1980s utility hardware and 2026 luxury minimalism.

The Decked Out Verdict

The Ghost 2.0 is more than a colorway; it’s a study in material continuity. By removing the visual noise of the 574’s multi-layered construction, Stone Island has highlighted the silhouette’s structural integrity. It is an industrial artifact that feels like it belongs in a gallery as much as it does on a terrace.
