Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! If you didn’t already hear the news, Luka Dončić dropped a preview of his upcoming Luka 5 sneaker on Christmas Day, and excitement is in the air. The NBA star’s fifth signature basketball shoe, the “Venom” hits stores on January 8, 2026, and is described by Nike as being a shoe that “hears from Luka directly.” Decked Out (pun intended) in a vibrant Illusion Green/Black colorway, the Jordan Luka 5 “Venom” isn’t just a new colorway; it’s a total technical extravaganza. The campaign was already a stellar one, featuring cameos from the likes of Boban Marjanović and Adrian Wojnarowski, but there is plenty more here to discuss. What’s more, Dončić also shared the holiday love with his Lakers fans, on and off the court, surprising 25 fans in the 300 section with a special Luka 5 gift package. Additionally, 15 fans had their seats upgraded to a suite provided by the NBA star, adding to the excitement.
Let’s take a look at what the “Venom” has to offer, shall we?

Consider “Venom” a remix of its predecessors. Arriving at a pivotal moment in Dončić’s career—his first full season with the Los Angeles Lakers after his shocking trade from the Dallas Mavericks last year, the “Venom” is a signal of a new era. For starters, this colorway features a high-contrast blend of electric neon and deep black that serves as an electric introduction to this new chapter. According to Nike, the upper is constructed with a reinforced, lightweight mesh for enhanced breathability. Additional features include sculpted sidewalls and synthetic overlays for a sleek, streamlined silhouette.
The Technical Evolution
Since we’re on the topic of new features, Jordan Brand is introducing a first for the Luka signature line: a full-length Zoom Strobel unit, which is bound to be a game-changer, specifically for guards like Luka who need power, speed and precision on the court. But that’s not all, either. There’s also the incorporation of Nike’s Cushlon 3.0 foam and the newly integrated ISOband system. This ISOband system works in tandem with Nike’s signature ISO-plate, giving you performance and function, all while looking good on the court at the same time. Make no mistake. This isn’t just a style update, it’s a certified high-performance toolkit.
The Luka 1-5 Evolution
To understand where we’re at from a technology and design standpoint with the Luka 5, we have to revisit the earlier models. Jordan Brand has used this line specifically to experiment with different “control” technologies:
- Luka 1: The Luka 1 introduced the IsoPlate and Formula 23 foam. Design-wise, it was a minimalist low-top built purely for the step-back.
- Luka 2 & 3: These models expanded upon that original design, as they focused on what is known as “Containment.” The Luka 2 & 3 added more Cushlon padding and evolved the IsoPlate to handle more lateral force during sharp cuts.
- Luka 4: The monumental pivot. The Luka 4 was the first in the line to introduce Zoom Air (forefoot), signaling a move toward more “pop” and less pure “ground feel.”
- Luka 5: That leads us to the 5, which is now the point of flagship transformation. By swapping the small unit for the full-length Zoom Strobel, Jordan Brand has finally given Luka the elite cushioning setup usually reserved for the $200+ Air Jordan game shoe.
With Luka now sporting the Purple and Gold after the blockbuster Lakers trade last season, the ‘Venom’ aesthetic feels like something of a spiritual successor to the Mamba line. [By the way, check out our breakdown of the Nike Caitlin Clark ‘Anywhere’ logo for more signature shoe news.]
