We’re focused man…
While the original Swizz Beatz-produced version of “The Best of Me” was a standard R&B ballad, Part II (featured on the DJ Clue? Presents: Backstage Mixtape) was a complete hardware overhaul. It transformed a modest radio single into a visual and sonic blueprint for the crossover era.
“The Best of Me Pt. 2” is the next file entry in our library.

The Sonic Hardware: The Trackmasters Logic
The remix was engineered by the legendary production duo Poke & Tone (Trackmasters), who were the undisputed kings of the “Radio-Ready” R&B/Hip-Hop hybrid in 2000.
- The Sample: The track is built on a heavy interpolation of Biz Markie’s 1987 classic “Make the Music with Your Mouth, Biz.” By stripping away the ballad tempo and replacing it with the Marley Marl-inspired drum break, Trackmasters created a “High-Velocity” pocket for Jay-Z.
The Visual Tech: The UNC Jersey Dress
If the song provided the audio, the music video—shot in Malibu—provided the uniform for the next few years of urban fashion.
- The Blueprint: Mýa’s UNC Michael Jordan Jersey Dress became an immediate cultural staple, as the artist is widely credited as the “foremother” of the jersey dress trend, a move that successfully merged high-performance sportswear with high-fashion femininity.
- The Jay-Z Factor: Hov’s appearance in the video solidified the Roc-A-Fella aesthetic: crisp white tees, heavy platinum chains…you know, the whole early 2000s yard.
Legacy Audit: The ‘Crossover’ Peak
“Best of Me Part II” didn’t need a #1 Billboard spot to become an “Entity.” It peaked at #55 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart but maintained a 20-week “long-tail” run. “Best of Me II” also served as the lead single for the Backstage documentary soundtrack, proving that a remix could carry more cultural weight than an original LP single if the swag (the feature, the beat and the fit) was correct.
And it remains a classic til’ this day.
