[THE FILES] 074 | Standard Issue: The 2000 Technical Breakdown of Adidas ‘The Kobe’

In the year 2000, Adidas and a young Kobe Bryant set out to delete the traditional “basketball shoe” blueprint. They moved away from the organic, wavy lines of the 90s (like the Feet You Wear tech) and moved toward industrial minimalism. The result was The Kobe, a shoe that remains one of the most polarizing and futuristic pieces of hardware to ever hit the hardwood.

That’s right. Adidas’ ‘The Kobe’ is the next file entry in our library.

The Automotive Hardware: The Audi TT Sync

The design wasn’t just “car-like”—it was a formal collaboration with the design language of the Audi TT Roadster. Adidas designers focused on the car’s clean, arched roofline and weighted proportions.

  • The Grill (Toe Box): The signature “Shell Toe” was flattened and reinforced to mimic the front grill and bumper of the TT.
  • The Spoiler (Heel): The raised heel tab was engineered to provide lateral stability, doubling as a visual “spoiler” for the silhouette.
  • The Material Spec: The upper used a unique Injection-Molded EVA foam. Unlike leather, which stretches and creases, this synthetic shell was designed to hold its rigid, metallic shape regardless of the torque applied during a crossover.

The Performance Specs (The 2000 Build)

While the exterior looked like a concept car, the “engine” under the hood was pure Adidas performance tech:

  • Midsole: A full-length adiPRENE cushioning system for impact protection.
  • Support: The Torsion System—a TPU bridge in the arch that allowed the forefoot and rearfoot to move independently, preventing midfoot flex.
  • Interior: A double-foam collar was added to lock the ankle in place, compensating for the stiffness of the molded outer shell.

The 2001 Title Run

This is also the shoe Kobe wore while securing his second NBA Championship in 2001. Its legacy is tied to that “Yellow” (Sunshine) colorway he debuted at the All-Star game, which turned the shoe into a neon cultural icon. It proved that a basketball shoe could be “Architecture” rather than just apparel.
