Open Source: Virgil Abloh Archive Launches Public Membership and Reader Vol. 001

Virgil Abloh famously said, “Everything I do is for the 17-year-old version of myself.” Today, that version of Virgil just got the keys to the kingdom.

The Virgil Abloh Archive (V.A.A.), stewarded by Shannon Abloh, has officially transitioned from a private legacy into a public operating system. With the launch of The Viril Reader Vol. 001 and a new public membership program, the 20,000-piece archive is finally being “unlocked” for the next generation of architects and editors.

The Hardware: The Virgil Reader Vol. 001

This isn’t just a coffee table book; rather it’s a technical schematic of a career.

  • The Core: The inaugural publication serves as a comprehensive deep dive into Abloh’s design thinking.
  • The Interface: It compiles foundational interviews and features from 032c, Business of Fashion and System Magazine.
  • The Design: Crucially, the V.A.A. opted to reprint these features in their original layouts and designs, preserving the “UI” of the era in which Virgil first shook the industry.
  • The Specs: Features a foreword by i-D editor Thom Bettridge. Pre-orders are live now at VirgilAbloh.com.

The Software: Public Membership & The 20K Database

The Archive, however, isn’t just paper. The V.A.A. houses over 20,000 physical objects—prototypes, original sketches, digital media, and personal library materials. To manage this, they’ve also launched a free public membership:

  • Digital Excerpts: Members get immediate access to digital portions of the Reader.
  • Priority Access: Sign-ups get first-look at future drops, including the highly anticipated “Codes” hardware and future invitational collections.
  • The Newsletter: A direct “System Update” from the V.A.A. team, continuing the open-source ethos Virgil pioneered with his Notes on Design and Free Game platforms.

The Event: LA Activation (March 14-15)

To celebrate the rollout, the Archive is hosting a two-day activation in Los Angeles on March 14 and 15. The event will feature curated talks, screenings, and readings. It’s a physical manifestation of the membership—bringing the community into the room where the codes are discussed.

The ‘Decked Out’ Verdict

The Virgil Abloh Archive is proving that a legacy isn’t something you protect; it’s something you distribute. By making these 20,000 objects accessible through the Reader and the Membership system, Shannon Abloh is ensuring the “Virgil System” remains the most powerful open-source tool in creative history.
